Why Vein Clinics Have Risen
One issue that you may be dealing with like countless other people is having spider veins or varicose veins on different parts of your body that might need to be taken care of at vein clinics. It is hard to say how many people actually have these types of veins because they usually hid them and do not discuss them out of embarrassment. If you were now aware that you have the option to finally get rid of these veins, you should look into making an appointment with one of the many clinics that are out there to help with this problem. These clinics have become very popular among people with varicose veins because they are finding it is the solution that they have been searching for, for such a long time.
If you have not heard much about vein clinics, you might be a little hesitant to schedule an appointment because of not knowing what to expect. To help become a little more acquainted with what is offered at them, you could visit their websites or gather reading materials. This can also be beneficial because it can give you a better idea of what services they offer and which service you feel would be the most beneficial.
To find out if vein clinics will be the right choice for you, one of the best things that you can really do is just schedule an appointment with one to find out more. This way you can meet with a practitioner and ask them all of the questions that you have on the services that they provide and if they can fix the vein problem that you have. Hopefully after this appointment you will have a clear idea if they are the solution you have been looking for. You can then make the appointment to get the problem fixed and can move on to living a healthier, happy life without spider veins.

The Million Dollar Question - Are Varicose Veins Dangerous?
Situation #1: Ultra-Prominent Spider Veins
If your varicose veins are quite prominent, they may injure easily. This often can result in severe bruising or bleeding. The small veins can even begin to bleed on their own, which can be very scary. If this happens to you, the blood will spurt steadily in a stream because there is pressure.
What You Need to Do if This Happens to You:
Immediately get your leg elevated and put pressure on the affected area. Your doctor should be consulted if you find yourself more and more prone to these types of injuries. And as scary as it may be, it's not nearly as dangerous as when situation number two or three happens.
Situation #2: Thrombophebitis, Anyone? Bueller, Bueller, Anyone?
Thrombophlebitis is by definition an inflammation and clotting in a superficial vein. And if one of these clots goes down into a deep vein and keeps growing then the result is a DVT, also known as "deep vein thrombosis". This becomes a potential danger to your health. Only your doctor can tell you how bad it is and what you should do about it. Some signs you will notice if you are suffering from thrombophlebitis are pain along the path of the affected vein being very hot, and quite red in appearance. You will also be able to even feel the hard clot. The pain will last for about a week but the hardness of the clot can go on for months.
What You Need to Do if This Happens to You:
Consult your physician to see what treatment options are available to you.
Situation #3: DVTs or Deep Vein Thrombosis - The Really Scary Stuff
DVT, or deep vein thrombosis, is another danger surrounding varicose veins. This occurs when a blood clot develops in a deep vein. You will generally notice this in your thigh or calf muscle. This condition has the ability to partly or completely block blood flow to the part of the body it is affecting. Often resulting in swelling and chronic pain, the valves in the blood vessels can be damaged with this and you will have a difficult time walking. This blood clot can become life threatening if it breaks away and moves to major organs. A blood clot that lodges in your lungs is called a pulmonary embolism and can turn deadly quite quickly often within minutes.
What You Need to Do if This Happens to You:
Seek medical attention immediately. DVTs are serious business, and should not be taken lightly. If you think that you are suffering from a dvt, see a doctor - now!
Fortunately, all is not doom and gloom since spider veins are not normally dangerous for most people. However if any of the above situations happens to you then be aware that they can be the springboard for some other very dangerous, and often life threatening, conditions.

Varicose Veins – Causes And Symptoms
Varicose Veins are often mistakenly believed to be a cosmetic problem. The fact is, Varicose Veins is very much a disease - one with cosmetic manifestations and often little pain, but a disease nonetheless. Endeavor to manage this disease instead of just shrugging it off saying "I wear saris/salwar kameezes/trousers all the time anyway. Who's going to see my legs?"
Enlarged veins, which appear as either varicose veins or spider veins, are quite common, especially among the aging female population. According to The National Women’s Health Information Center, as many as 60% of all American women and men suffer from some form of vein disorder. Women, however, are more affected by 50%. 41% of women in their 50s, in fact, suffer from abnormal leg veins.
Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that are visible just under the surface of the skin. They form when blood flow in the veins slows due to a weakened valve. A valve is a one-way flap that stops blood from flowing backwards. When this happens, blood collects, and a varicose vein develops.
Causes
Veins are blood vessels that normally carry blood from the foot and leg upwards, back to the heart. Blood will not normally travel downwards in the reverse direction as there are one way valves inside the veins that prevent this occurring. In some people faults can develop in these valves (we do not know why for most), and blood is permitted to travel not only towards the heart, but can also travel backwards (reflux) towards the foot, especially on standing. Veins that reflux are said to be incompetent or to have incompetent valves. Over time this leads to a higher pressure in the veins and they gradually become swollen and varicose, although this can take many years.
Causes include congenitally defective valves, thrombophlebitis, and pregnancy. Prolonged standing and increased pressure within the abdomen may increase susceptibility to the development of varicose veins or aggravate the condition.
The squeezing of leg muscles pumps blood back to the heart from the lower body. Veins have valves that act as one-way flaps. These valves prevent the blood from flowing backwards as it moves up the legs. If the one-way valves become weak, blood can leak back into the vein and collect there. This problem is called venous insufficiency. Pooled blood enlarges the vein and it becomes varicose. Spider veins can also be caused by the backup of blood. Hormone changes, inherited factors, and exposure to the sun can also cause spider veins.
Symptoms
The first sign of varicose veins is a swelling along the course of the veins. This may be followed by muscular cramps and a feeling of tiredness in the legs behind the knees. In some cases, the normal flow of blood towards the heart may be reversed when the patient is in an upright position. This results in veinous blood collecting in the lower part of the legs; the skin becomes purplish and pigmented, leading to what is known as varicose eczema or varicose ulcers. Both these conditions cause severe pain.

The Truth About Varicose Veins
When veins in the human body become enlarged, they are know as varicose veins. The color of these veins can vary. They can be a dark blue, blue, purple, or even a flesh like color. These veins look like they are wrapped and enveloped into each other. They are at their worst when they actual enlarge past the skin and protrude. These veins do not make wearing shorts fun and they develop mostly on a persons legs.
If you suffer from the problem of varicose veins, don't worry; you are by no means alone. Over half the women in the Unites States on America suffer from this problem. I always thought it was just something that happened to woman, as they get older. I then found out that there are many factors that could cause a woman to get varicose veins. I remember when my wife first started getting them. She was the ripe old age of 28. Were expecting our third child. That's when I found out that one of the causes is an increase of the flow of blood in the body. Because she was pregnant there was more blood flowing through her veins.
The problem of varicose veins can escalate into something much more serious than just bad appearances. If left untreated a woman could start to feel some discomfort in her legs. That discomfort can lead to extreme pain.
Because the legs are so far below the heart the veins located there have the hardest time pumping the blood back up. As more and more pressure is put on the legs (through pregnancy, weight gain, etc) the blood collects there. It is pumped through at a much slower rate than the rest of the body. The collection of blood could very easily lead to blood clots. This is a very dangerous situation as blood clots passed to the heart and brain cause strokes and possibly death.
Another cause of varicose veins is one that we would not think of. Women can become afflicted with varicose veins from over expose to the sun. Yes, too much sun can bring on varicose veins. These varicose veins don't show up on the legs but in a far more obvious place. They appear on the face. Also women with a family history of varicose veins are much more likely to get them too.
How can you avoid the problem of varicose veins? Well first, limit your exposure to the harmful effects of the sun. No you don't have to lock yourself inside. Just put on a good sun block with a high SPF. Also watch your weight. Don't gain too much to fast. Keep to a healthy diet and regular exercise to keep that blood flowing like it should.

Keeping Varicose Veins Away May Be As Simple As Changing A Few Daily Habits
I was honest with her. Varicose veins often run in families but the condition is not necessarily inevitable. I assured her that there are defensive measures that can be taken to improve her chances of preventing the onset of varicosity, a term used to describe swollen veins.
Approximately half of all middle-aged Americans develop this condition, more so in women than in men. Although varicose veins is not life-threatening, if left untreated it may become more serious and cause bleeding under the skin, blood clots or leg ulcers.
Why the Legs?
Any vein could become varicose, but your leg veins are most susceptible. Your blood has a harder time flowing upward against gravity due to the distance between your heart and legs. When you exercise, your body maintains good circulation because when leg muscles contract, the blood is pushed upward. Tiny valves in your veins open to let the blood flow through and then close again to prevent the back flow of blood as it returns to the heart.
When these valves become damaged or don’t work properly, blood pools in the veins, circulation is hindered, and the veins swell. They appear on your legs as blue, bulging or lumpy. Your legs may ache, itch, cramp or develop a sensation of heaviness.
Unfortunately, varicose veins cannot be cured completely, but there are things you can do to bring relief and improve the circulation in your legs. If you do not currently suffer with varicose veins you might want to implement simple changes in your daily routine to guard against developing varicosity in the future.
Eliminate Contributing Factors
Since good circulation in your legs depends on activity, a sedentary lifestyle is probably the greatest contributing factor to varicose veins. Take time to incorporate moderate exercise, such as walking or cycling, into your routine.
Anything that hinders the flow of blood through the veins can contribute to poor circulation. Obesity, for example, causes compression of the veins so that blood can’t flow as freely. Try losing extra pounds by consuming a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables. Eliminate refined carbohydrates (such as white flour and pasta), processed foods, and sugar.
If your job requires you to stand on your feet all day or to sit in one position for prolonged periods, it is even more important for you to include exercise as part of your daily activities. When you are sedentary, your leg muscles are not given the chance to contract enough and circulation is hindered. If you must stand most of the time, be sure to take rest periods throughout the workday. Sit down and elevate your feet, if possible, or walk around a bit. You may also try shifting your weight from one foot to the other or standing on your toes periodically.
If you are sitting, increase the blood flow by propping your feet on a small box or stool and by flexing the muscles of your legs, feet and toes. Take a few minutes to get up and walk around every hour or so, as well.
Even wearing constricting clothing (such as girdles) may interfere with blood flow so opt for something loose and comfortable. There is one exception to this rule however, and that is to wear supportive stockings or hose which helps to keep less blood from pooling in the veins.
Proper Nutrition Improves Your Veins
In addition to an overall healthy diet, specific foods and nutrients help to prevent varicose veins as well as to promote their improvement. Make sure you get plenty of vitamin C, which reduces tendencies toward clotting, and vitamin E, which improves circulation and helps prevent the feeling of heaviness in the legs. You may need supplements to ensure that you are getting adequate amounts of these vitamins.
Other supplements to consider include: coenzyme Q10, which increases circulation; essential fatty acids, for the reduction of pain; glutathione, which protects veins and arteries from oxidation damage; pycnogenol (pine bark extract, a source of powerful antioxidants), which helps stimulate circulation.
Eat lots of blueberries, cherries and blackberries. Their antioxidant compounds strengthen the vein walls and reduce the buildup of certain enzymes which tend to weaken the veins.
If you aren’t fond of eating berries, try bilberry extract, which contains the same antioxidant compounds. To improve your circulation try butcher’s broom, ginkgo biloba, gotu kola and hawthorne berries. Bromelain, an enzyme found in pineapples, reduces the risk of clot formation.
When Plagued with Varicose Veins, Try Natural Relief
1. Mix ½ teaspoon of horse chestnut powder with 2 cups of water. Use this mixture, or witch hazel, to reduce discomfort and strengthen veins. Moisten a sterile cloth and gently rub over the affected area.
2. To stimulate blood flow, use white oak bark herbal tea. After making a strong tea, make compresses and apply to legs three times a day.
3. For a convenient soothing topical ointment, try aloe vera gel.
4. If you are suffering from poor circulation in your legs, get moving, eat a healthy diet, and ask your doctor about adding natural supplements that might improve your condition. You may be surprised at how much better you feel when you follow a few simple life changes. If varicose veins run in your family start now before it’s too late!
